Started in 1971,Pulse, the Annual Socio Cultural Literary and sports meet in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, brings together a vast swathe of students from across South Asia. Organized by the AIIMS Students' Union it is one of the largest fest in India. Medical students from all over India, as well as from Pakistan, Nepal and other nations join college-goers from Delhi University and the IITs for a week of revelry. Added to the mix are the students, residents, scientists and nurses of AIIMS, who consider Pulse as the highest point of the academic year.
Held from the 16th to the 22nd of September every year, Pulse is a highly awaited event for several reasons. Massive dance parties that go on through the night and throbbing live music by nationally famous performers are the main attraction. Every game under the sun is played by keen-headed competitors from every corner of India. The Gymkhana and the swimming pool provide the setting for people to witness the sweet smell of victory, as well as the agony of defeat. Literary events , quizzes, debates, elocutions and JAM are of the highest quality in Delhi. They regularly attract hardcore quizzers from the national circuit owing to the prestige of winning in Pulse. Dance and music competitions provide an opportunity for budding and accomplished artistes to showcase their talents. Informal events, ranging from love-letter writing to ladies, arm-wrestling provide fun-on-the-run for those who want to show some spunk. Mr. and Ms. Pulse, with its huge prizes and bragging rights for the winners, also draws massive attention from the delegates.
Preparations for the events start off in earnest months in advance, not just in AIIMS but also in the participating colleges. AIIMS gets ready for Pulse with a flourish, with the campus freshly painted and decked up. The crowds that throng the AIIMS grounds overwhelm those who are new to the institute, because they represent a massive departure from the organized regularity of life in a medical institution. Stalls overflow with food, drink and trinkets. Sales campaigns are conducted out of a plethora of booths set up to take advantage of the young blood gathered. Video game stalls, dance stages and rock-climbing are but a few of the additions that sponsors have made over the last few years.
In short, Pulse is an awesome extravaganza of fun. It is the quintessential college fest - massive, raucous, loud and exhilarating. The memories taken away from Pulse stay with every delegate for a long, long time, and the friendships made are stronger than steel.
